Beethoven’s 250th birthday and DHL’s 50th anniversary -
Time to celebrate with a once-in-a-lifetime world tour
In order to reach as large and as broad an audience as possible all over the world during the Beethoven anniversary year, the itinerary for the BTHVN on Tour exhibition was planned to include several international concert halls and opera houses. First port of call in spring 2019 was the legendary Leipzig Gewandhaus. From there, the tour proceeded to the USA with stops in Los Angeles, Cincinnati, New York, and Boston before making the return journey to Europe in time for the start of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. The most recent venue in February of this commemorative year was the Barbican Centre, a major concert hall in London, where a long weekend was given over entirely to the composer and his works. The other stops planned for 2020 have had to be canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. A decision on what happens next with the exhibition tour will be made as soon as possible.
.Here you have the chance to explore BTHVN on Tour in the virtual world
BTHVN on Tour combines original exhibits and high-quality facsimile reproductions made especially for the exhibition using multimedia technologies, thereby offering visitors fascinating insights into the life and work of Beethoven.
Among the rare items on display are an ear trumpet which the composer used to amplify his failing hearing, his violin which he clearly marked with his initials and an original art print from Andy Warhol’s 1987 Beethoven series. The interactive multimedia exhibition provides visitors with an even deeper understanding of the composer and his creative processes. One of the animated presentations shows Beethoven writing and reworking the manuscript of his famous Diabelli Variations.
The exhibition also allows visitors to compare their hearing with Beethoven’s limited faculty and thus to experience first-hand how much – or rather how little – the primitive ear trumpet was able to compensate for his hearing loss.

DHL has been managing the logistics throughout the entire duration of BTHVN on Tour. This includes not only transportation but also the installation and assembly. For each stage of the tour, DHL moves seven tonnes of exhibits and equipment by truck and by air. Over the two years of the tour, the freight will have traveled 50,000 km .
As a partner of many famous orchestras and museums, DHL has extensive experience in transporting instruments and exhibits that are not only valuable but also exceptionally fragile. The exhibits sourced from the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn are individually packed in custom-made crates. These are individually lined with padding and specially sealed to protect the exhibits from damage due to shock, vibration, or temperature changes. The high-grade containers are shipped using DHL Smart Sensor Tracking technology. This ensures that the temperature and humidity are maintained at a constant level throughout.
